SuperSole is a sole-construction method developed and patented by Red Wing in the 1970s. At a time when the U.S. work-boot industry was shifting toward low-cost cement construction, Red Wing created SuperSole to offer a more durable yet cost-efficient alternative.
Like Goodyear welt construction, the welt is first stitched to the upper and insole. Instead of sewing on the sole, the boot is placed into a mold and polyurethane is poured in, forming the sole firmly around the welt. This creates strength comparable to Goodyear welted boots while allowing the use of high-quality oiled leather, which is unsuitable for cement construction because oils weaken adhesive bonds.
The polyurethane sole also provides excellent grip, abrasion resistance, and cushioning, resulting in lightweight, and durable boots. Over time, this method - along with the use of Poron midsoles - became a core technology in Red Wing’s work-boot line and is still used worldwide.
Model #8133 is a Japan-exclusive version based on the widely worn 1980s–1990s U.S. mock-toe #204, upgraded with Japan-favored Black Chrome leather.
